NEW YORK, N.Y., Sept. 17, 2008 – Richard L. Furman and John A. Orzel have joined Carroll McNulty & Kull LLC (CMK) as Members in its New York office. With the addition of these two senior attorneys, CMK will now provide counseling and representation to domestic and global clients in practice areas that include admiralty and maritime law, surface and air transportation, environmental matters and international trade.
CMK’s comprehensive services will include litigation, corporate and commercial transactions, government affairs, trade regulations, insurance coverage and defense, personal injury claims, and products liability. The firm will handle matters relating to all aspects of marine, surface and air transportation as well as international trade, commercial documentation and governmental regulation of the transportation industry and defending criminal prosecutions arising from such matters.
“CMK has the broad support network and resources to deliver the services that maritime and transportation clients need and want,” said Furman, who has more than 37 years of experience in representation and litigation on behalf of companies engaged in international and domestic transportation and trade.
Orzel, who has focused on all aspects of transportation law for nearly 20 years, agreed and added, “CMK’s proven strength in complex commercial litigation, and in insurance coverage and defense, will be particular areas of value for clients in the maritime and transportation industries.”
In 1997,
Christopher Carroll,
Joseph McNulty and
Gary Kull founded CMK. The firm recently expanded its New York office as well as its headquarters in Basking Ridge, N.J. and now has 47 attorneys. In addition to the practice areas of Furman and Orzel, CMK’s primary practice areas include insurance coverage, construction and surety, insurance defense, commercial disputes and business counseling, and employment.
Attorneys Possess Complementary Experience in Maritime, Transportation and Trade
Furman and Orzel have worked together for a number of years representing domestic and international clients in maritime, transportation and trade matters. They are recognized as authorities in this area, and they have held leadership roles in numerous industry associations and have authored articles and books on related legal issues. Prior to joining CMK, the lawyers were partners at DeOrchis & Partners, LLP, a Manhattan-based maritime law firm.
“Richard and John have particular expertise in international maritime, transportation and trade,” remarked Kull. “Their combined depth of experience is the perfect complement, enabling us to offer comprehensive services to clients in this specialized practice area.”
Furman is admitted to practice in New York; the Northern, Southern and Eastern Districts of New York; the Federal Circuit Court of Appeals; the Northern District of California; and the Eastern District of Michigan as well as the Court of International Trade. He currently serves as the United States general counsel to a number of global transportation service companies, tending to their transportation, regulatory and commercial interests including handling of multi-million dollar acquisitions and sales. In this role, Furman also provides advice and representation before numerous federal administrative agencies tasked with regulation of domestic and international trade and transportation.
In particular, Furman has become expert in the complex new laws and regulations that have evolved since 9/11, which deal with securing goods in transit from being used by terrorists and others as a means of attacking U.S. citizens and interests. Throughout his years of practice, he has worked with insurance companies and brokers, NVOCC's, indirect air carriers, truckers, warehousemen, freight forwarders, customs brokers, and importers and exporters.
Orzel is admitted to practice in New York and the Northern, Southern and Eastern Districts of New York as well as the Second and Fourth Circuit Courts of Appeal. He has represented a range of transportation clients from maritime to surface and air in federal and state courts and in arbitration proceedings before the Society of Maritime Arbitrators, the American Arbitration Association and the Judicial Arbitration and Mediation Services.
In addition, he regularly assists clients in non-contentious matters relating to vessel financing and documentation, corporate mergers and acquisitions, public works projects, off shore mineral exploration, international joint ventures, secured transactions and government regulation. Currently, Orzel is updating Goods In Transit, a seven-volume treatise on transportation law, which encompasses marine, rail, truck and air transportation.
“This is a great step forward for CMK,” added Kull. “We have two skilled, dedicated, and highly professional lawyers joining us who share our core philosophies of client service
and professional excellence. Their practice areas and clients complement ours and provide potential synergies that we are looking forward to exploring.”
CMK provides legal counseling and representation to clients of all sizes nationwide, ranging from Fortune 100 companies, insurers and construction companies to closely-held corporations, family-owned businesses and individuals.
